Don’t do it…DON’T give your child a cell phone!!!!!! (1 Comment)

W e all know that the best way to quiet our children is to give them an electronic device.

.
The worst thing we ever did was to give our daughter a cell phone.  We did it when she was in grade seven because she was responsible for walking her four younger siblings back and forth to school each day while I was in school full time.  We felt she needed a phone in case of emergencies.
.
Basically, I lost my daughter the day we handed over her phone.  She had a three hour free calling window and unlimited texting. And believe me, did she get our money’s worth.
.
But we lost her.  She became a teenager.  Eager to please her friends and talk to her friends and be with her friends. And when she wasn’t with them, she was texting them. She stopped talking to us unless she needed something.
.
She has recently come back to us. But it has been a battle between she and I.  Me, demanding she spend time with her family, her  wanting to spend more time with her friends. Me, wanting her to WANT to spend more time with her family.  We are fun people.  People like to spend time with us. Really.
.
But now she’s back to interacting with us again.  Chatting and telling us about her day. Sitting on the couch and watching Frozen or Walking Dead with us.  She sits on my bed each night when she comes in for a goodnight kiss and tells me about what’s happening in her life.  It’s nice to have my baby girl back.
.
I never intended to give away my daughter when we gave her to a cell phone. But now she has found balance.  And the balance includes us.  I might never need to hide her cell phone again..or at least not for a little while.

After posting this entry, I noticed that in the last paragraph I said ‘..never intended to give away my daughter when we gave her TO A cell phone.’ I actually meant to write ‘..never intended to give away my daughter when we gave her A cell phone.’ But my mistake actually sounds just about right.
